Holy smokes, what I figured would be a quick and easy task is really starting to tick me off.
So I decided I would pull the rear wheels and check the brakes.  My driver's side rear tire area was really really hot and smoking last weekend.
The rear tire will not come out of the wheel well. I took the air of the tire which helped a bit but the rim still gets stuck on the wheel studs.  I've been at it for a bit but no luck. Is there a trick or tip or am I just a pathetic rookie?
Thanks

How have you jacked up the car? If you jacked it up by the axle the tire didn't descend and expose it more. Jack it up by the bumper or by the frame right in front of the wheel, right ahead of where the spring meets the frame.

Just a silly question, please don't take offense, it doesn't have a fender skirt still on it does it? Embarrassing to ask that, but there it is.

Beyond the above, a picture would help a lot.     Jim Stamper  CLC# 13470

Thank you Sir that totally makes sense.  I currently have the jack under the rear differential. I will move my jack else where and see how that works.  My jack stands are underneath the rear axles. I guess I should probably move these as well

Worked like a charm.  Now I'm trying to the drum off.  Took of the two retaining bolts but that drum is really tight.  As I'm getting off,  small pieces of, what looks like the brake hardware is coming out.

Make sure the parking brake is fully off.  Make sure there is a little slack in the parking brake cables and that the cables are not frozen in their housings.  You may also need to back off the brake shoe adjustment.  If you don't know how to do that, ask one of your mechanic type friends to show you.  It's far easier to have someone show you how to do that than it is to explain in words.

I finally got the drum off and now I know why the brakes got really really hot last weekend.  As I was removing the drum, I noticed pieces of metal were coming out of the bottom.  The hold down cup and spring assembly on the right side snapped at one point and the brake shoe on the right side was basically grinding on the drum for quite some time. Are these parts easily found at any auto store?  Will I have to locate a new drum?  If yes, whats the best source?  It also looks like my wheel cylinder was leaking on the left side.  I am headed on a one year remote tour in a few weeks which means I will be putting the car in storage so I guess I'm just looking for a quick safe fix.  I should probably replace the shoes all the way around, correct? The first three pics are of the hold down cups and spring assemblies on the left and right side.
Thanks

G'day Dominique,

Actually, that leak isn't too bad, braking area is bad.   By the look of the leak, all you need to do is hone out the cylinder, and fit replacement cups, but what seems simple, could turn out to be a replacement of the whole Cylinder.   But, if it is that bad, and you cannot get a replacement, simply go to your nearest Machine Shop, and have then bore it out and re-sleeve it with a Stainless steel Sleeve, back to original specifications.

I would simply be replacing the broken part, and depending on how bad the Drum is, putting it back on, and then into storeage for the time you are away.

I am not sure if replacement Drums are still around for the Rears, but I do know that the Front's are not being reproduced.

In the 12 Months that you are away, I am sure that you will b e able to locate a replacement Drum, by placing a "Wanted" notice on this website.

G'day Dominique,

That looks like the cleanest Brake Drum that I have ever seen come off a car.

If the surface is still within the maximum machining limits, it will machine out, but from the pictures, it is hard to see what is wrong with it.

Is it cracked, badly grooved?   I have seen, and used a lot worse than that one in the past.

Thanks Bruce. The white lines shown on the drum that go all the way around are the grooves.  I ran my finger across the grooves and they don't feel too bad.

If it were mine, I would take the drum to my local NAPA store, most have a machine for "turning " drums, they can tell you if it is reuseable or not and fix it up.  You should be able to get new brake parts from them but they might have to order them.  Rock Auto lists new rear drums as well as a brake cylinder overhaul kit (or new brake cylinders), and brake shoes.  ----  http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php
I would rebuild all four, if one is leaking the rest are too or soon will be.  BTW, be aware that front drums are scarcer than hen's teeth as Bruce mentioned, treat those with loving care.

NAPA should have or be able to get these parts also and would be more convenient and quicker than Rock Auto.

Any recommendations to obtain brake hardware kits as fast as possible? I visited every local auto parts store with no luck. NAPA did have a hardware kit, but it was for a late 60's Cadillac.  The spring and retaining pin were longer but I was wanting to know if that would work for my 59.  Thanks

Napa does not have 59 wheel cylinders as of 6 months ago.

Thanks, but I'm only looking for the brake hardware like the springs and cups/spacers and retaining pins for now.

G'day Dominique,

If you can email me with the dimensions of the parts you need, by measuring the non broken ones from the opposite side, I should have some in my parts bin that I can send to you.
