Does someone know the difference between these starters? I don't have the older type and am trying to see if it's the orientation of the solenoid and / or the depth of the 'nose cone'. The bellhousings are different, but not sure how since I don't have them in front of me. Yes, I know the '64 Turbo Hydra-matic is special. Just concerned with the hydra-matics. Any measurements of either appreciated. thanks, Jeff

I believe the main difference is between the 1957-62 starters, which have the front of the solenoid as part of the starter nose casting (thus hiding the pivoting arm assy) and the 1954-56 (and earlier) style, with the completely exposed solenoid.   I'm guessing on the 56, but I'm positive on the 54-55 version. I'm fairly sure the lbottom bolt on the later starter is not in the same location as the earlier one. Don't know anything about 63-64 starters. Mike Simmons 938

Hi Mike, I did find a few differences. The bolt and solenoid orientations are all the same.
Here's the differences:
56-60
Overall length 10” (not counting the ‘nipple’ on the forward end)
Frame extension 1-7/8”
Nose cone 2-1/2”
Tip of nose cone has 7/16” hole

61-64
Overall length 11” (not counting the ‘nipple’ on the forward end)
Frame extension 2-1/2”
Nose cone 2-1/2”
Tip of nose cone which extends from it’s end by ½” and  is 7/8” in width and has ½” hole
