This is loosely related with Cadillacs, but I thought folks here would appreciate this.

A friend periodically cleans out stuff and takes the stuff to the dump.  He admits he frequently comes back with more than he left there.

One of the things he found at the dump is pictured below.  He has donated it to the non-profit I volunteer with.

I "second" the spring tester, and not necessarily just for valve springs.

Must be a small town dump,  I have seen good stuff at the dump too but based on all the signs posted everywhere would not dare to pick anything up.   Even if that was possible there is then the issue of arriving at home as you say with more than you left with, if you live alone that may work.

Yes it’s a spring tester; I’m guessing it is a 1920s or early 30s model.  Since I have access to it I’ll be testing the valve springs on the 68 ELDO with it.

It was used to test the valve springs on a 1932(?) Peerless being restored.

I believe he brings this stuff in the back way so the wife does not see it.  She just sees the outgoing stuff and is happy.  (-:

Whenever I bring things back from any tip, I am happy to show it off to my wife, as she understands me. ;)

PS.   Once I brought back a Kero Heater which I picked up all the pieces that the "Tipper" had tried to spread it all over the place, and used it for 35 years, before selling it on.
