Folks,

When you open the trunk on my 1937 LaSalle Coupe there is a well  at the rear of the trunk. It is about 4 inches deep in the center of the valley and is around 38" long. My 38 65 series has a similar well.

It seems that this well is for storage of tools. The 1937 Fisher Body Construction Manual mentions this is what it is for when discussing sedans.

My questions is did, originally, these wells have a cover? If so what were they made of wood or fiber? Were they covered with trunk material?

I cannot comment on the 1937 LaSalle but on my 1939 LaSalle C4D there is a well space, the width of the trunk for tire repair items and tool kit. This is area is covered by a piece of wood. I presume your 1937 is similar. I will send you a picture.
