I have a 1956 Cadillac with a Hydra-Matic. I have to get it rebuilt because there is a lot of leaks and I have some slipping. I was quoted 3,000. Is this fair?
This includes kit, removal and installation. I think this is a little high but I've never been through this before.

And uses too much gas
Some folks say it's too old
And that it goes too fast
But my love is bigger than a Honda
It's bigger than a Subaru
Hey man there's only one thing
And one car that will do
Anyway we don't have to drive it
Honey we can park it out in back
And have a party in your pink Cadillac

If the rebuilder is reputable and guarantees his work, that's not far out of
line.  The '56 "Jetaway" was the first completely new redesign of the "Hydra Matic"
as a result was very troublesome.

In fact, most parts are the same from 1956 to 1964...I'm not sure, but the only part which was responsible for the bad reputation of the '56 transmission is the front oil pump sprag race. The first ones had a tanged end which could brake. This was replaced by a splined end. The mating part is the driven torus assembly from the front unit coupling.
For 2 years, I overhauled an early '56 transmission which had this problem. I replaced the parts with the improved ones.

My 56 Coupe is doing the same thing.  Our most reputable shop here in Oklahoma City quoted me $1800 - $2200

That 3,000 is a quote from the guy who's not touching my transmission.
