How do can I verify if a 1955 Cadillac Eldorado is original and if it is an original convertible.

Can I verify it by VIN #?

Please help a new buyer and new Cadillac enthusiast.

Dan LeBlanc

VIN # and information from the data plate under the hood are your two best sources.

Thanks for so much for responding.

I always wanted one, my father had one when I was a kid and I have many memories in his car.

Please let me know, what #s represent Eldorado and what #s signify Convertible?

Just want to make sure I buy the correct car.

Thank you for your help!

Look at the data plate under the hood on the firewall.

The "Style Number" should be 556267SX for an Eldorado Convertible.

Then, as a second check you need the "cars built" sheet from Cadillac
Historical Services that will verify that your VIN number (engine number)
is one that was used in an Eldorado.  See the Club website for how to
order this info.

For example, on my car, the VIN is 556221363, the last five digits are the
engine number and will be stamped on the engine boss on the block,
passenger side and will also be stamped on the front frame fork, same side.
If all this matches you've got a true original.

Mike,

Thank you for the help.

Can you help me decode this VIN # 5562611 ?

Again, I appreciate all of the help.

Michael Warnall

Mike,

The gentelman just gave me this info:

VIN # 556267SX

Body # FW2044

Please let me know if this is an original Eldorado Convertible.

Thanks in advance.

From the style number on the data plate it appears to be a genuine
Eldorado.

I can't comment on the body number for the same reason as the
engine numbers -- nobody has a complete list except the Cadillac
archives.

Send us some pics (engine compartment, body plate, three
quarter shots of the car, etc.) -- that would help.

There are many unique parts to this car such as the dual quads it
should have and the gold "batwing" air cleaner.

I would be worried if you found a '55 Eldorado that was not a convertible. Art Woody

Easiest way to tell is by the taillights.  The Eldorados had the rear-canted fins with two round taillights above the bumper.  The standard line had the illuminated fins at the top.

All Eldorados were convertibles until 1956.

There are many videos on Y-tube. This is one of them where she points out options. I dont know how accurate the film is, but here goes one of them.
