OK,

So here is the difference between a Left hand Drive and Right hand Drive 1936/37 75 series Steering Box. In short, they are totally different and not just in the worm and roller thread. Pitman Arm, housing, shaft lengths etc. etc. are all different.

In the attached photo LHD components are on the left and RHD are on the right.

In case you are interested, the two bearings (one each end of the worm) are both the same and are Timken 32-C cups and bearings. My bearing supplier tells me that Timken 32-C bearings interchange with Timken 31BC and I can't see any difference when comparing them. There is also a possibility that these interchange with Hyatt G644 but I won't swear to it.

Nice comparison picture John, Looks like apart from the bearings one could also interchange the roller on the Pitman arm shaft? I have see these on a shaft with bush and on a shaft with roller race, later replacements I guess.

Several of my club members have found they only have wear on the bearing surfaces top and bottom of the worm and have successfully had these surfaces ground back and pressed on the inner race that can be obtained for the bearings you mention.

Steve,

I had half ways convinced myself that the roller would reverse by simply turning it through 180 degrees but....

When I sketch the roller with the bias to the left and turn it through 180 degrees, it's still biased to the left. I would have taken the roller out of the shaft to check this but they have put a spot of weld on the nut that is on the thread. I could grind it off but I have offered it to Gene Menne and don't want to screw it up if he wants it. I am hoping I don't need to do anything more than replace the bearings and cups. I had no trouble buying new ones here so I'm guessing they are pretty common.
