Hi-

Is there a specific tool/method to remove the harmonic balancer from a 1957 Cadillac?  Without stabilizing the wheel, the balancer will turn as I attempt to turn off the bolts.  This is my first harmonic balancer removal, so your advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Surly theres just one large bolt in the centre? your not trying to undo the bolts to dismantle the unit are you?

If you have the access, an impact gun is the easiest way.

John, You should first remove the large center bolt preferably with a impact wrench.  If you don't have one just use a large 1/2 inch drive rachet or breaker bar.  You may need to enlist the help of another as the tendency will be that the crank shaft will want to turn also and this will prevent the bolt from backing out.  If you are sucessful in removing the large bolt, the pully and the balancer may come right off after pulling on it but more than likely you will need a harmonic balancer removal tool.  I will try to post a picture of mine.  The large center bolt of the tool sets in the center of the balancer then you will have to remove 3 of the 6 pully to balancer bolts.  You will then have to locate (often an assortment bolts comes with the tool) the right thread size bolt only longer in length and using the slots on the tool feed the bolts through the slot in the tool and then thread them into the holes in the balancer.  Each of the three bolts should be threaded as equally as possible, once this is done you can begin to tighten the center bolt of the tool and gradually as the bolt tightens the balancer will slide forward.  Got it?  Whew!

thanks!  do you know if its a right or left hand bolt?

Steve Passmore

Always left. anti clockwise against rotation, unless you have an engine that runs anti clockwise(and there are some)but thats a whole new subject.

Roger. Are we on cross purposes here?  I was meaning left hand anti clockwise to undo of coarse as I took the question to mean that, am I wrong?
