I'm having an issue with the fuel gauge on my '41, which was restored in the early 90's, about 13000 miles ago.

I've checked the wire connections at the tank and the back of the fuel gauge, and they're clean and tight.

The problem: the indicator needle 'bounces' strongly between the extremes of 'E' and the current level when the vehicle is moving. This is a strong 'drop' of the needle from the current level to 'E' followed by a strong direct return to the current level, with the needle then bouncing back and forth several times in between until it settles down.

The action occurs during normal driving when I go over a bump, or otherwise abruptly influence the vehicle's position - say by stopping suddenly, or even somewhat by rocking it while in place but I haven't worked that angle too terribly hard so as not to do damage.

( This is not the normal 'lightly floating' action of these gauges' needles which occurs from the wave action of the fuel due to minor vibrations, angle of the vehicle and so forth. )

When the engine is off, the needle is appropriately at the 'E' position. With the engine running and the car staionary, the needle is also at the appropriate fuel level with only the normal slight fluctuation as I described above.

Wondering if I need a new sending unit-?

Thank you Steve. Incidentally I've very much admired the level of craftsmanship you put into your restorations. I've viewed them in this forum in the past.

All the gauges I have seen, will go to full if the wire to the sender
is open.  Since yours is going to E instead, I think you have an
intermittent short to ground, NOT a loose connection.  My bet,
its in the wiring somewhere between the gauge and the tank.
good luck,

So it's looking like I will need a new fuel sending unit. I looked around, identified a source and bought one from a vendor; however now that it seems defective, they are not handling it well, so I'm wondering if anyone has advice on where to get one?

Stock type, 6v Positive ground.

Thanks
Scott

Hi Scott: I would take the original fuel sender that was in the car and get it rebuilt. I have used John Wolf & Co in Ohio, link below, for both my 41 and 47. Bill

Bill, as usual, I'm in your debt for the suggestion.

Hoping your current project is going well.
