What is the magic behind removing the steering wheel on my 39 LaSalle? I have been trying the gentle approach at every separation point but can't get anything to move. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a special wheel removal tool, without it you have very little leverage if you dont want to damage the wheel.

Hey Dan...Many auto service facilities and auto parts stores will rent steering wheel pullers for the occasion. It takes about 15 minutes and one sharp , well placed blow with a hammer, and that wheel pops right off like a jumping jack ! If you plan to go into the business you can buy a puller for less than $10. bucks at most NAPA stores.  bb

Perhaps I should have elaborated! I do not yet have the horn button & ring off in order to access the wheel. I would assume that the wheel was held on by a splined hub on a shaft retained by a nut. That would then allow use of a standard puller.

How about the horn button and ring?

You usually have to depress the button Dan and turn it slightly to the left I think, then it springs up reveling the retaining nut. Over the years the plastic sometimes sticks so it can be a little tricky. Remember to disconnect the horn or the battery first.

John Washburn CLC 1067 Sadly deceased.

Dan,

Once you get the horn ring off, a standard puller will work but will destroy the horn button connectore in the middle of the shaft. Not a good thing.

Check out last years Self Starter for how to remove properly.

Hello Dan

Good to hear that you are improving your LaSalle. May I suggest purchasing a shop manual, Authenticity Manual, and LaSalle Cadillacs Companion Car Book? Fred Zwicker and Bruce Berghoff can guide and supply your restoration needs.

I look forward to seeing your LaSalle at this years Grand National in Florida.
All good men own a Cadillac but great gentlemen drive a LaSalle. That is the consequence of success.
