a/c directional vent repair?

so everyone knows this problem.. your dash vents in your 70's caddie are flippy and hang however they want to hang.  To fix this issue I've seen people stuff matches in the side, folded paper, business cards, the insides of bic pens, paper clips, you name it but that all looks pretty junky if you ask me.

So I ask you, Cadillac club - what is the RIGHT way to fix it?  Does anyone know of aftermarket adhesive foam replacement pieces to stick on the sides of the vents so they'll stay where I want them?

I used 1/2 inch wide foam, that was sticky on one side. Bought it at the hardware store on a roll.
Just cut off a small piece and stick it on. I did pop the vents out to fix them.

I used adhesive felt on the sides of the vents once they were removed.

Yeah I was thinking felt more than using foam again.  How does it hold up in the heat?
