Can the pan from a 77 to 79 Deville be removed without droping drag links or other problems? Thanks in advance.

Too much fun is more than you can have.

Going from memory I think for the 77 downsize they made them more like the other GM's with the cross member more forward on the engine and the steering in front of that.  I have never tried to do it in the car but I would guess since this is still a fairly large engine that you may have to lift the engine off its mounts to clear the crank to actually slide the pan out but a catch there may be that since the Cads have the oil pump in the front the oil pickup tube may be an additional clearance issue in trying to slide the pan back.  It may be that the flexplate won't let you get it that far anyway.

One time I had a pan off with the engine installed.  It was a long complicated process with a lot of time laying on the ground under the car with oil dripping all over the place.  Got it back together and it leaked worse than it did before I messed with it.  Never again.  Doing a pan on a stand is easy because you roll the engine upside down and gravity helps you hold it together and keeps the oil draining away from your new gaskets.

Again this is memory and my experience which may not be what it used to be so your mileage may vary.

Yes the pan can be removed without disturbing any of the steering components, they are all in front of the cross members.

However, the engie will likely have to be lifted and quite possibly the y-pipe may also have to be removed. If you have access to a hoist, I'd definately use it. As TJ said, laying on your back to do this job certainly is not fun.
