Does a 38 Cadillac require a vented gas cap? If not how is the tank vented? If it does require a vented gas cap where would I buy one?

I am no authority on the '38, but would think it does require a vented gas cap.  The last time I needed such a critter I found that my local NAPA store had them in stock.

Correct, all cars till the evap systems were employed use a vented cap.

Great topic,  Many years ago I had a 77 Ford work truck on a job site and gas was being siphoned on  a regular basis and a conscientious employee installed a locking cap but unfortunately it was a non vented cap. No problem on short runs but when I sent the truck on a 100 mile errand and it collapsed the tank to about a 4 gallon capacity.  I don't know if our cars fuel pumps have enough suction to do that but at best the car will run out of gas with a full tank if not vented.

So installing a non vented cap on a vented system is a no no. How about a vented cap on an evap system car? Will the gasoline evaporate over time ?

I once, unwittingly, put a vented gas cap on the tank of a Ford 861 farm tractor.  Like your experience, it ran fine for about 15 mins.  Then it just died as though it was out of gas, even though it was not.

You have to check what your car was originally equipped with.   For example in 1968 all Cadillacs except the Eldorado used non vented caps. The fuel tank had a separate vent pipe.  The vent pipe on the Eldorado goes to the top of the filler pipe and needs a vented cap/

If I had played my cards right I could have gotten a Kawasaki Mule for cheap.  They changed the gas cap with a non vented one.  It would quit every once in a while (when the vacuum in the tank got to high) and would run very well all of a sudden (when someone took the cap off) and it would run for a good while.  They were ready to dump it but I figured it out and drilled a small hole in the cap.   If I had waited…..
