Changing a 47 Flathead to a 12 volt
« on: October 30, 2012, 08:33:59 PM »
I want to change my 47 flathead to a 12 volt.  I do want to keep the original generator look.  Does anyone know of an alternator out there that looks like the old Delco generators?

I have been thinking about this. I am still running 6v and probably won't convert to 12v, apparently, this guy does 6v gener-nators upon request...

Called gene-nator & they will rebuild your generator to a 12v system for $895.00 with core charge. 60 amps.

I found these as well for $421.00.

Wow. $895, Jeez, that's not even close to practical.

Thanks for the info on the power gen...

Darin, My 1947 Cadillac was converted to 12 volts & the generator conversion was not hard to do. You will need to get a 12 volt gen. from a cad. of the 60's with A/C along with the proper voltage regulator. You will need to install the front mounting plate with bearing & the rear plate with bearing from your 47 generator using the armature & field from the 12 volt generator. The next thing is to install the pulley from your 6 volt gen. After this you install the regulator & you are good to go. The gen. for a car with A/C is heavy duty & is a better choice. Make sure you use the proper regulator for the gen. or you will be in trouble. This conversion will be cheap & easy to do. If you decide to do this E mail me & i will give you all the other information you will need to do this. The total cost will be about $600.00. You might want to go to a professional starter & gen. shop to convert your gen.

Why do you want to go to all this trouble?  What's wrong with your 6 volt system?

Whit, There is nothing wrong with a 6 volt system on a old Cadillac as long as the cables are heavy & the battery is high cranking amps. The reason most people convert to 12 volts is they can add A/C, stereo, electric fan, & charge there cell phones on a road trip. Also you can find 12 volt parts when you need them. Other then that a 6 volt system works great.

The power-gen costs about $350.  I put one in my 50 coupe a few years back when I did a 12v conversion (including getting rid of the points and condenser).  I sold that car to a guy in Holland and he still sends me a postcard every Christmas.
