Hello all, I have a '47 sedan on it I have a set of '47 rims with a set of '48 and latter Sombreros on it which leaves a 1/4 gap between cover and rim.I would like to find out if there a way to modify the wheel cover or if a trim ring would fill in this gap or would my best bet be to get a set of latter rims until find a set of '47 Sombreros. Thanks all and have a good day.

Hi Marty: The main difference between the 47 cap and 48 cap is the width of the inside retainer. On the 47 the width is 2 1/4 inches and on the 48 it is 2 1/2. I suppose one could drill out the rivits holding the retainers and switch retainers. The 48 wheel is about 1/2 inch wider (bead to bead) than the 41-47 wheel. The 48 wheel uses a 820x15 tire. With the correct 47 wheel, 700x15 tire and with the correct 47 cap, the clearence with the shirts at the cap is about 1/2 inch and at the outer edge of the tire is about 5/8 inch. Now using a 48 wheel with the larger tire and 48 caps will cause clearence problems with skirt at the cap as well as the  outer edge of the tire.

I ran 48 caps on my 47 convert for many years until I accumulated four 47 caps.I never lost a 48 cap and you have just enough clearence at the skirts.  As you know other than measuring the width of the retainer, the quick way to tell a 47 cap from a 48-52 cap are the drainage holes in the retainer. The 47 cap has only one drainage hole while the 48 cap has two. These two holes in a 48-52 cap can either be side by side or 180 degrees apart.       Bill

Thanks Bill, I guess my best bet would be to hang on until I find some nice "47s. I know Bill Hirsch has repros but I'd rather hold out originals.

  Hi Marty,

I have a lot of hub caps I believe are correct but needing chrome work. My 1942  6719 came with incorrect 15 inch wheels and hub caps and throughout the restoration I  ended up with about 15 incorrect  (incorrect for my car) hub caps.   I will be out of town for a couple of weeks but if you are interested when I get back I will fish out the better ones and send a photo.  garygriffin@Q.com.
