346 Questions, Front seal and paint
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:36:58 AM »

My 346 was rebuilt by an experienced machinist but now as we approach start up my shop has a question about the front shaft seal.  Can the seal be seen from the front of the engine? It looks like there is nothing in the cavity between the block and the shaft.

My engine is painted in the correct color from Bill Hirsch but what color should the harmonic balancer, and other engine parts. The block and manifolds are easy but there are several brackets. A good picture of a correctly painted 346 would be helpful.

Those following my Restoration Blog for my 1942 model  6719  will soon see a lot more pictures.

The front seal is inside the timing cover Gary and not visible from outside, Its spring loaded and  presses against the inside surface of the timing cover not at all like a normal seal that you would expect to see.

The 1941 Authenticity Guide had most of this info for my 41 - I presume 42 would be mostly the same.  My book is at the shop, but I can check specifics later if you ask.  Here are the 41 answers - the harmonic balancer and pulley, water pump & pulley & air cleaner bracket are green.  The fan is black, but the fan pulley and the casting the fan bearing mounts in is green.  Distributor is black, but the shaft extension form it to the block is green.  Bell housing and transmission are green.
