I am working on a 41 Series 61 and the owner just had the grille chromed but the inside where the chrome is not very shinny is like a yellowish color and i think it will stick out when the grill is put back together and on the car. Were the backs of the grilles painted silver or black by any chance?

Steve Passmore

That colour is because the chromers equipment never had the power to throw the chrome in, its the nickle showing through.   My chromer had to send out the grill to an industrial shop because he never had the power in his transformer. All the grill should be chrome.

No, while the entire grille die casting was Chromium plated, the inner areas of the grile were done in black. The nose faces of the grille were polished Chromium, but the areas back in the grille were painted dull black.

Tyhis is rarely seen, as the paint wore off of the grille in the first few years. The correct parts of the grille are hard to describe without pictures.

I'll bow to you superior age Doug,  I'm a few years short of seeing a new original grill, most I'v seen have been chromed and show the pits as mine did or have been painted to hide the pits, as I did with mine later. You just imagine that with newly cast metal the chrome would cover 100%.

Maybe the factory couldn't throw the chrome in that far either.  Not much paint around that will stay on chrome so as you say it would fall off in a few years.

I guess the tricky bit is deciding where the chrome should end and the paint start and whether this would cover the yellowing that Sipko is experiencing, and of coarse how to get paint to stay on there.

ok that answers that question. Thanks gentleman

I have the same situation with my 1942 grille but yours sounds worse.  The 1942 can be easily be taken apart and each piece can be chromed and then reassembled.

I suspect mine as as good as factory chrome was though.

When the grilles were made, they were totally chromed. NO yellow showed. The areas that showed were smooth & the areas that didn't were a rough casting. The grilles were painted a satin black starting on the rear of the upper lip of the horizontal bars. If you want I can try to send you a picture or maybe post one.

Bob
I am expecting my 41 grille back from plating in a few days, so a picture of where to start the satin black would be much appreciated.  Another nuance in this area - are the heads of the mounting screws black as well?

Thanks

Guys,
Sorry but I can't get a picture to show anything. The comments in my previous response are the best I can do. The black gives the grille "depth" & covers the rough areas.

Bob
I was able to dig out my spare grille and took a picture from the back side.  Does the black start at the small step down in the horizontal bars, near the front of the vertical divider?  I took out 1 vertical to make the picture a bit clearer.

Thanks

Hi Paul,
Good picture. I looked at several original grilles. The paint line was close to that small step, but the line was slightly different between the grilles. My re-plated grille was polished to that point so I decided to use the step as the line. NO one should fault you for doing it that way.

Thanks Bob!  I will go with that as the mask line.
