Can anyone confirm how the VIN number is applied to the frame rail on the right side of the engine on a 1948 Series 62 Cadillac?

Is it stamped into the metal or painted on.   I know this may sound like a strange question, however if it might be painted on I don't want to destroy it by cleaning the area to improve visibility.

Thanks Jeff, just what I suspected and what made sense.   Just wanted to be sure.
