 Hi!

Iam trying to locate a new coil for my 38. As you are probably aware this is the one connected to the armour cable for the ignition & certainly isn't off the shelf item. Can anyone give me information on where I can purchase one.

If you still have a good cap & armor cable, there is a possibility on ebay for a really good price http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nos-35-36-37-38-39-40-41-42-46-47-Cadillac-Chevrolet-Olds-Pontiac-Speedway-Coil-/380641967834?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item58a0077eda&vxp=mtr.

Otherwise you may want to try Eddie Jones or possibly AllCads.

Before you go ordering parts for that coil, understand that the polarity of the spark at the plug must be negative, for the engine to run properly.

There have been all sorts of aftermarket ignition coils that claim to work on all cars. Finding a coil that is made for positive ground systems is no easy task. I had a dead coil on my 38-60S, and  as a stopgap measure, I had a bought a universal replacement 12 volt coil, and installed it with temporary  connections. With it, you connect the negative terminal to the wire in the armor, and the positive terminal to the distributor.  Why does it work? In 12 volt ignition systems, there is a ballast resistor in the harness, that drops around 5 volts to the coil. those coils operate on about 8 volts in 12 volt systems, and a 6 volt car runs around 7-7.5 volts under way.

Here is the web site for Atwater Kent products who still make positive ground coils as well as the old Atwater Kent radio parts.

Bill,

I had almost given up finding a new coil, & was not excited about NOS (75 years old)  I have e mailed them for more information.

Many thanks
