From 1940 and up most models had a rubber mounted bronze bearing in the clutch release relay lever.  The other end of it had a ball stud.  This was needed because the angle of the relay lever was not always perpendicular as the engine moves on application of the clutch.  On almost all of these that I have had apart the rubber mounted bearing has failed.  This is a very special bushing with a steel outer shell, rubber and then a bronze bushing all molded together.  The rubber is needed so the bushing can flex slightly.  McMaster-Carr has a substitute for this part.  It is part number 6364K32 in their catalog.  The ID of the bushing is 1/2" and the OD of the original is 7/8".  The substitute is 1" OD so the relay lever needs to be machined out to 1" for this bearing to fit.  Hope this information can help others fix this problem.  It is very important to have all the bushings and pins in the clutch linkage like new to get good clutch engagement action.
