a friend of a good friend of mine asks if a '41 cad has provision for  a thermostat in the block.   Because of the shutters, I did not think so.  Apparently Packards of that era had the shutter thermostat, and a thermostat in the block for flow restriction.  Because the over heating is primarily at higher speeds, and not idling or around town use, they were curious to know if an in block thermostat was provided or can be adapted to restrict flow and perhaps solve the problem.

No other thermostat other than the one controlling the shutters in a 41 Tony.

Check the radiator cap first but you could attribute the over heating at high speeds to a partially blocked radiator Tony, it would cope with the flow at low speeds but when high revs are called for these engines will really shift some water, if it doesn't pass through that rad fast enough the temperature will rise. just speaking from costly experience. One tail-tail sign though is water coming out the overflow when you come to a halt.

When the car is overheating at high speeds the first check should be the lower radiator hose.  The hose should have a “spring” inside that prevents the hose from collapsing from the suction of the water pump.  The check is simple, squeeze the hose with your hand.  If you can squeeze it so that the two sides touch anywhere along the length of the hose the spring has rusted away.

You can buy a new hose (with spring) or use a piece of heavy gauge wire and make your own.

Thank all of you for this good information.  I have sent it forward, hopefully it will make this car f'unctional again.
