What was the earliest cruise control on a Cadillac? Effective?

'59 was the first year for Cadillac.

I don't know how well it worked, others will have to comment on that.

David is right - '59 on Cadillacs ('58 for Chrysler).

Mine holds rock steady, and I'll be grateful for it on the 600 mile drive to the GN in Boston, next week.

David, Thanks.
Jim, have a good trip, and honk if you pass a 52 heading north.
Could a 59 cruise control work on a 52?

Mike, if I see a '52 heading north, I'll pull into formation and be your wingman.

It might be possible to engineer a CC into an earlier model. The engine compartment components are pretty simple, and mounting could work. The trick - though not insurmountable - would be in finding an adequate place for the controls & switches. I think that a '62 or later model, with the speed control dial (or wheel) would be easier to find a suitable location somewhere in the cockpit. Why don't we confer at the GN?

BTW, I'll be leaving Virginia Tuesday AM, on a route to avoid NJ & NYC traffic, planning to arrive in Boston mid-day Wednesday.

I personally wouldn't try retrofitting a '59 Cadillac unit to work.  I installed an aftermarket cruise in a K car I had and it worked well and was easily removed.  Of course, all cruise units are going to be 12 volt.  Unless you converted your '52 to 12 volt, to go 60, you may have to set it at 120!!!!

Italian cars had a rude cruise control: a hand set lever for the butterfly control. Was probably working well if the road was level and certainly less prone to problems than the first cruise controls!
