Is it OK to use brake cleaner to clean off brand new drum brake pads? I got a little bit of dirt and maybe a tad of grease on the pads of the shoes when I was installing them...

Thanks in advance for the due diligence.

Thats actually what brake cleaner is for. Never use compressed air.

Hand prints seem to come off fine.

Its when its been heated / used that you can no longer seem to remove oil from pads and shoes.  It must get baked in.

To prevent this, I always cover the linings with masking tape before I mount the shoes. When I am done, I pull the tape off. No worries about getting grease/dirt on the linings and I can handle the shoes as needed.
