I have the opportunity to get a deal on a freshly rebuilt 1961 390.  I believe this will bolt right in to my 1956.  Is this correct?  Any differences in exhaust manifolds or other accessories or bracket placement that would hamper this?

Jim,

I’m not sure it will be a straight bolt-on; there are several differences between them (you may know these);

The motor mount on the 1956 are not the same as the ones for 1957-1961.

The exhaust manifolds the LH are the same, the RH are not.

The tranny housing on the ’56 is not the same as the one for ’61.

The flex plate also changed in the ’61.

There could be other caveats, others may chime in.

Good luck…!

I always thought the engine block was essentially the same block from 49-62 with changes to bore and stroke for the displacement changes. If that's the case, you should be able to bolt on your 56-specific accessories
