What color should the engine compartment hood color be ? Someone told me a portion ( maybe the front part ? ) should be black and the remainder should be body color . If any portion is black , shoud it be gloss , semi-gloss , or flat ? ...Thanks, Paul Tesone CLC #6876

Paul,

The underside of the hood is black. The vertical edges of the hood sides are body color. The finish has more shine than semi, but less than gloss. It’s like the shine of GM carb air cleaners. The hood pad is also unique. It’s a black vinyl pillow with binding around the perimeter and filled with insulation. The two cross bars attached to the underside of the hood are also black.

Thanks Ralph - I'm redoing some things in preparation for the 2014 GN . Now's the time to make things correct .   Paul Tesone CLC #6876

The underside of the hood was basically chassis black.  Hoods and fenders were stamped and painted at Clark, not Fleetwood where the rest of the body came from.

The inner edge where the hood meets the fender is body color.  The lower edge is the black with some of the body color overspray.

Ralph & Walter - is this the overspray onto the black underside , the black edge of the hood , and the cad plated bumper adjustment piece that you referred to ? Seems like an odd place to end the body color and start an edge of black . Looks like it would have required masking . Thanks again , Paul Tesone CLC #6876

Paul,

In the top pic that could be red overspray. My car didn’t have it though.

The middle pic shows the demarcation line between the black under hood paint and the body color along the side of the hood. I too was surprised how neat the edge was.

I believe the little wire hangy down thing at the rear center of the hood was silver cad.

What an interesting topic... our car in the paintshop right now....

Any more hints about original colors?
I guess front inner splash shields? that are bolted inside of the fenders are black and fender itself is body color (I mean inner part that is bolted to the frame and radiator support)

We also have issue with original body color No. 98 that should be copper bronze.
It seems that nowdays paint-systems doesn`t offer any suitable code for that. We only have few little pieces with original color but its too bad quality to scan it into computer with special device.

I also contacted Dupont  some times ago but they also could not help.

Any suggestions?

Hi Valts,

The detachable front fender splash aprons are a semi or satin black on both sides. Inside the engine bay very little of the splash apron is visible. In the bay, part of what looks like a splash apron is actually welded to the outer fender. This is the section that’s over the “A” frames where they mount to the chassis. The engine compartment side of the panel is body color. The underside where the wheel and tire are was usually black from undercoating.

You may be able to get code 98 made in the new paint. Search ebay for a copy of the ’57 Dupont paint charts. The color chips are about ½” x 1 ½” which is large enough to scan.  At the ’09 Grand National I saw a copper Biarritz that was restored by Harbor Restoration in Florida.. The shop owner (I forgot his name) is very nice to talk to and if he still has the records, I’m confident he’ll try help you. Give them a call.

Thanks for the hint! I contacted them via e-mail and got an answer that they are back in the shop after the holiday and if they find the paint code, they will send it to me.

If someone else happens to know anything about factory 98 paint code, I´m all open for it.

But what about "cadillac-blue" engine paint code, it should be more available, since  all caddys have the same....?

I also found this several months ago, but when putting those codes in the paint programm, it shows nothing, It may be some USA/Europe difference in systems-programs etc......

BTW, did you get my message about body tag?
