It's LA.  They once had a very modern rail system...that they are now trying to put back in. Very cool film, thanks for sharing!!

Hello J. Bice

This is a wringer.

The post indicates L.A. but it looks like San Francisco?
All good men own a Cadillac but great gentlemen drive a LaSalle. That is the consequence of success.

Here is another one from 1946. Soundtrack is fantastic as well. I thought I saw Jack Kerouac lurking on a corner . . . .

The title said 1940 but I saw a car that was either a 1942 Mercury or a 1946-48 Merc, so it was at least late 1941.

Can't mistake the Art Deco coolness of city hall. And too many palm trees to be SF!

Stephen,
Thanks for posting it. I watched it twice. I agree 1947. I'm amazed by the number of old cars on the road. However... I'll bet that within 10 years, no, make that 5 years a large % of those prewar cars got junked. As soon as the people got a new postwar  car the old car was history. And there was nobody there to save them. Sad.

Stephen:
I spotted a 46-47 Cadillac on frame at 6:12. Both were fascinating presentations.

I cant believe the courteous and sedate pace of it all, in London today they drive as fast as possible and 12" from your rear bumper!

It's interesting that somebody would want to make such a film.  Imagine today, 2013, you've got nothing better to do one day, so you mount a camera on the back of your car and you cruise around your city filming the traffic behind you.  You'd probably consider yourself nuts!  Yet, 70 years from now it would be considered a valuable.

Did you see the split-second view of a clapboard and scene count?  I'm willing to bet this was done by a Hollywood movie company in order to pull out clips for a movie.

That makes sense.  They'd have the film's male and female leads sitting in the front seat of a dummy car while a clip from this film would be shown through the rear window to give the impression they are driving somewhere.

Steave; Thanks for posting the film of the 40's in Los Angeles. I was born in Los Angeles in 1936 at the Los Angeles Hospital on 11th st. & Figueroa & my mother worked as a secretary for Angels Flight office. I rode on the Angels Flight several times as a young man as well as the electronic cars that traveled on the streets. At 16 years of age I started working as a auto mechanic at Kingsly & Melrose in the hollywood area & at the age of 18 owned a 1947 Cad. Fleetwood . I have worked on many Cads, of the 40's & 50's & have a love for old Cadillacs. I now own a 1947 Cad. 62 sedan. with about the same millage as my first 47 that i owned 60 years ago. When I drive the car I have now It takes me back to my younger days. I believe that is why most of us own the cars we have today.

Yes, these were filmed as stock footage for use in movies, projected on the screen behind actors in a mocked-up car...
