My winter project is working on a 1956 hearse (S&S) I got about ten years ago.  I bought it and stored it, now I am starting on it.  The hood won't stay up, there are no springs on the hinges!  Can anyone with the master parts book tell me what all years and makes and models might fit?  I am going to the Canfield (Ohio) swap meet tomorrow and need to be on the look out for them.
Thanks,

Hey Matt.  Congrats on finally having the time to start your newest project!!  As far as I know I believe the hood springs from 54 through 56 should be the same.  I'm not positive however I'm pretty sure.  Hope this helps and good luck tomorrow on your treasure hunt!!

Matt,
My 1966 MPB shows the 56 as one year only. 54/55 are the same. The 56 spring is a lot cheaper than the 54/55's. Maybe someone has some first hand experience. Maybe Cad Cliff has some real 56's.

Too much fun is more than you can have.

54 & 55 hood hinges are totally different than the '56 ones. This is the reason why the springs were cheaper for 1956. Have a look in a shop manual for 1954 and 1956 to understand. Sorry, I'm away from home and cannot show a picture.

Matt,

As Bob and Roger stated the 1956 hood spring is a one year only per the MPL. The 1964 MPL shows the part # for them under Group 8.013 -> http://www.modifiedcadillac.org/documents/Shop_Manuals_and_Illus_Catalogs/Master%20Parts%20List%20thru%201964/Group%208/tn/Group%208%20-%2015.jpg.html

The spring measures approximately 6” in length with 1 ½” OD and 0.24” spring thickness. You may find an equivalent one from other GM models.

The 1956 Chevy “looks” similar, the picture is just for reference. Although the Chevy hood is lighter it may not provide the necessary tension for the heavier Cadillac hood.

Good luck..!
