What is the procedure for getting information about where my car was originally sold from and any other info that GM or Cadillac might have? Its just a 38, 60S but I am just curious where it started off from.  Thanks, Martin

The information on your car that Jeff mentioned only gives the dealer that the car was shipped to, and how it was equipped. While we lavish care and love on our cars, to be blunt, GM could care less about your car. It is one of thousands produced each year, and if they kept records about the zillions of car made, they would be floating on a sea of paper.

Facts such as "who bought it," how many are left, etc, etc, can sometimes be garnered from who you bought the car from, especially if the original purchaser may have been someone famous. These facts can usually be taken with a grain of salt, but thankfully, a few cars do carry their history with them.

For instance, I found that one of my 1941 Cadillac coupes was owned originally by a well-known stock broker in Indianapolis, a Mr. Nicholas Noyes. The only SO feature was a leather covered front seat. The back was still plain cloth.

Good luck on your quest, but I wouldn't spend too many long winter evenings trying to find out your car's history. It's much more fun to work on them. The only movie I've seen with a 1938 60S is Johnny Eager. It was on the other evening on TCM. Also featured were a 1939 Buick and Lana Turner's 1940/41 Continental convertible.

Thanks Jeff, I really am just interested in what part of the country it started off in.

Thanks again, Martin

Martin, the info you get from the GM archive is nice to have for sure , I was fortunate that my 41 60S still had the original owners card in the right front kick panel, someone had laminated it at some time.  I ordered the build sheet etc and was pleased with what I got. I was also able to search the originals owners name thru ancestry.org and find out several things that make for interesting reading for people at car shows etc. He was a doctor in New Jersey and bought the car when he was in his sixties.  Pearl Harbor happened a few months after his purchase and I found he had registered for the draft.

He was in his 60s and Pearl Harbor occurred AFTER he bought it and THEN he registered for the Draft?

In his 60s???

And he was a Doctor???

I though it was only the Germans that inducted men in their 60s, and then only in 1944-45...

Re: marty55cdv's post:  Sounds like the doctor was a patriotic American wanting to help with his expertise at a period of great national emergency.  That is not a province of the young only.  Besides, the armed forces severely needed medical personnel and his thought probably was to help as many as possible that would get caught up in the fighting.  At any rate, who knows if he actually served; you have to dig deeper to find out.  I enjoy this kind of history; it makes the old cars we enjoy much richer in experience when we learn more about the people that owned them.

Well, He Certainly would Not have been drafted. It Is possible that he would have been commissioned as a Dr in the Medical Corps.

On a similar line, how does one get the same information on a Cadillac built after 1970?

I think that's a more like scenerio too. I would do the same thing, I would volunteer and that's probably what he did as well.
