Now that the Holiday season has come to past, I can finally get serious with this Caddy. I have been doing a lot of information collecting, advice collecting and meeting some great people on this forum. And I want to thank each and every one of you. Special considerations for Gary Griffin for going out of his way to help me.

I just registered as a member of CLC on the National Level. I also ordered the Authenticity Book as advised. I have a Customer ID on the emailed receipt (2142) but I don't think that is my CLC number.

Do I need to register separately for my local chapter?

I am now searching for a service manual and proper rebuild kit for the carburetor. My car has the 346 ci v8 with a Stromberg carburetor. As best as I can determine, the carburetor is a series AAV-26

These kits are readably available and sometimes come with an instruction leaflets.

In my opinion Daytona Carb (http://www.daytonaparts.com/) is probably the best. They make or supply the parts for kits and also will rebuild the carbs. The AAV 26 is a little more difficult than just cleaning and installing the parts. There are a number of lead plugs that need to be removed so as to allow thorough cleaning. When re installing these plugs it has to be done properly or there will be a leak. Daytona will rebuild for show or driver use.  Good Luck,    Harry

Another good source for carb kits is the Carburetor Shop in Eldon, MO.

This firm is certainly the best source for kits for the Carter WCD 2-barrel carb used on many '48s, all '49-'51s and possibly earlier years too, as new metering rod jets are included.

Is the tag still on your carb? If so give me the number, I may have the service manual I can send you.

James,

On the Stromberg AAV-26, which is original for the car, there should be a number under the accelerator pump arm, on top of the carb. It should start with 205-then two numbers and possibly one alpha. This will tell you the year (205 denotes Cadillac).

There is no tag if you find the number, I described, I can decipher. If my instructions are not clear can send a picture.

Also the Carburetor Shop has the best kits with the correct parts. Then can also provide new jets and screws if needed.

But as Jay mentions the rebuild is a bit tricky without the correct tools.

Johnny,

Joe and I determined that the Carter carburetor was used in later models of that same year and as such, my vehicle has the 486S Carter carb.

I had thought it had been replaced as the service documentation Carl received when they purchased the car originally, shows only the Stromberg AAV-26. We have confirmed the Carter is correct, found all the tags, numbers and so forth.

I appreciate the offer of assistance. You will all soon discover just how knew I am once I really get this project under way.

Yep,

Cadillac came with either the Carter or the Stromberg... Both are original to the car.
