I have a 1939-9059 that I couldn't find the vin. The normal location is on the left front motor mount were a V8 engine would be install for the 90,and on the left top side frame next to the firewall for the V8s or 75 series. My 1939-9059 was pitted badly on the corner of the motor mount pad, basically removing most of the numbering. When I removed the body from the frame I looked the frame over completely, couldn't find anything until two weeks ago when cleaning the frame I could feel indentations in the left frame rail directly under the drivers seat, 1" ahead of the center running board support bracket. After removing the rust with glass blasting the numbers 5290076 looked me in the face. I knew this was correct from the original engine, but I couldn't verify it. Now I have.
So I checked the other 1938-1940 cars in the barn and 6 of 8 had the remote vin. in that location and the other two may too. I checked by feel, running my fingers under the top flange and you can run a file from the underside,it will show the stamping area. This must be the hidden location generally used. It could not be altered due to its location or even known about.
I hope this will save time for others or more importantly allow you to totally check out I Cadillac before purchasing.

Yes, this location was discussed and confirmed on this forum when someone in Germany was trying to verify his number on a 36 Fleetwood last year.

If you look down through your battery opening under the seat you should see it on the top of the chassis rail.

On the 1939-90 I have the battery box is on the right side. All of the cars I've checked the numbers are on the left side under the drivers seat directly opposite the battery, even with the center of the X frame work. Ken Dennison just had the body off his 1940-9033 and located the numbers there also.
You can not read them or see them without a mirror. And yes, please stop if your in Fort Wayne, the barn look is gone with the new floor, insulation, white siding inside and geo heat. After many years on a dirt floor it's the barn I always wanted.

Clarification to the last post. The battery on the 1938 75 and 90s are located under the passenger front seat. The 1939 and 1940s are under the right front fender.

The 39 has battery under the left floor pan, not the seat.
I have body off frame. I'd like to know the distance from the front engine mount. I dont want to grind the whole frame to find it. Thanks.

Mo, The three 1939 cars I have the battery boxes mounted to the frame under the right front fenders. Two of cars are V16 formals( a 5pass and a 7 pass) the other is a 75 series Towncar. Is your car a 60 series? The area to clean is on the top flange, it is stamped only 3/8" from the vertical web. It is approximately 1" forward the center running board support bracket. If your car is a 60 series without running boards I don't know. I can only share information from the 75 and 90 series cars I have. Hopefully another 60 series man can help you, but I would start center left frame rail.
Good luck, Steve Loechner

I think looking at Mo's picture his is a 50 series. The 50 and 60  have many differences with the larger series.

When you are looking for the VIN, I would not use a grinder,it might remove some of the material and make it unreadable,i would use some 100-60 grit sandpaper and scratch the surface lightly to try and make it appear,or the best way would be to sandblast the area and it will show perfectly,if it is there?even a wire brush should help it show. True I  have a LaSalle 5027 and have found the VIN the normal place left side and matches the "build sheet".
Sorry to confuse you Steve, you are offcourse talking about the larger series and they have the battery different from mine.
So I guess the remote VIN is not found on the smaller series?
Anyway I'll soon find out, as I have the frame off and will soon repaint it and add new rubber body mounts.
Harvey, true, and I'll remove paint with an rotating steel brush.

Dan Sibila

Just trying to assist here since this article was useful for me! My Fleetwood 75 serial number was located as follows for those trying to find.  Small brass wire brush worked for me to locate it!

Thanks,

Thats the normal position Dan but the original thread was the location of the remote number which is under the floor on top the chassis rail.
