10w-40 with 2 bottles of zddp plus is what I have been using in my 346 for years and the engine runs great

The Current SN oils are very good overall but lack the amount of zddp required

If the manual calls for a 20W oil, you can use 0-20 or 5-20 oil. The lower number indicates the flowability at cold temperature start ups. The 20 is the equal to viscosity at operating temperature. What you want is an oil with 20 weight viscosity at operating temperature.

Keep in mind, newer oils don't have the zinc and phosphorus the older oil generations had. Although, today's oils with the lower levels of Zinc and phosphorus are probably far superior than what was available in 41, in regards to wear protection and film strength.

John, Since your engine is newly rebuilt and has not been started I would use the 5/20 with the ZDDP additive as previously suggested. I would also plan on changing that initial oil fill after several hundred miles or equivilant hours and at that point go to 10/30 with ZDDP for warm weather. The ZDDP is very important for these engines without it they can wipe in a short period of time. Good Luck,    Harry

I am not as old as your 41,,  but close!  It used to be in vehicles of those years to " break-in"  engines for a few hundred miles or so on a light weight oil, say 10W . This was also accompanied with the instruction not to run at high speeds, nor for sustained periods of time.  This meant to fluctuate driving speeds every so often by 10mph or more !   The oil was changed at about 300 miles as was a filter replacement which would have picked up all the grinding particles etc embedded in the block during the rebuild process. Start by adding a ZDDP additive, then oil then a multi viscosity or 10 wt detergent oil.
After the "break-in" procedure, I would first, use a ZDDP additive to protect your cam and lifters, and then a good quality motor oil like a 10w-40 detergent grade oil.  This viscosity might differ depending on the climate in which you reside.
Hope this helps.

John, the Indiana Region of the CCCA has available the proper oil for classic cars. They also have a site describing it.

I use kendall GT-1 exclusively. It has the correct additives in it already. They call it "Liquid Titanium". It's not much more than regular oil.

I suggest you follow Barry Wheeler's advice and order the proper oil from the CCCA of Indinia.  The phone number: 317-225-0040.
