After driving our '93 Allante for about 15 miles or more a strong fuel odor starts building in the cab. I am sure it's not coming from the engine compartment. Outside the car the strongest smell comes from near the fuel door. When you open the filler cap there seems to be more pressure than normal. Could this be a problem with the vapor canister or the tank vent valve?

Any thoughts/comments are appreciated.

I'd suggest calling Dick Hussey in Florida.  He owns an Allante only repair and parts facility.
His number is 1-561-844-3938.

Another Allante expert is Johnny Monzo in NJ.  1-609-634-6518.

The other is Tom Rhoner at www.allantestore.com in CA.

Thanks Brian for jogging my memory regarding Dick Hussey. I called him and he suggested it may be the gas cap not sealing properly. His fix is to inspect the o-ring in the cap and if not cracked use some silicon lube on the o-ring. If that doesn't fix it try a new cap.

Dick is valuable source for Allante owners. He has helped me in the past with parts and advice. He shared his knowledge freely on two occasions. One when I had a hard time bleeding the air out of the cooling system and another when I was swapping out a failed window regulator. The shop manual's directions were not the way to go on the regulator and Dick's were spot on.

I had a similar problem with my 1987 Allante years ago. Replacing the cap solved the problem. They are cheap and readily available.

I think I bought one at Pep Boys. The cheapest fix I ever had on that miserable money pit.

Is it safe to assume you are not a huge fan of the Allante?   ;D

When the new gas cap finally came in it took care of the problem.
