Is there a gasket or rubber under the hinges and locking mechanism of the spare tire covers in the wheel wells on the 1940 V 16? It seems that it would to prevent chipping the paint, but I can't seem to find out .

Hello Ken

Good question. I am not aware of a factory gasket or rubber. The spare tire should fit snug once the locking mechanism is in place. If you desire to preserve the paint inside I would use foam or rubber.
All good men own a Cadillac but great gentlemen drive a LaSalle. That is the consequence of success.
