The MPB shows all 41's whether stick or Hyd. having the same balancer. It then shows the 42 to 48 Hyd. cars having a different  & much cheaper one. What is the  difference?

Bob,

I don't know for sure but it sure looks like the harmonic balancer was eliminated for the hydramatic for 42 to 48.  The lower price is exactly the same as the earlier LaSalle one which is just a pulley.  Someone with a late flathead hydramatic can confirm.  There is just so much information in the MPB.

Thanks for that useful tit-bit Brad. Bob was kind enough to be chasing that information on my behalf. My 41 coupe has a 48 engine fitted and has no balancer which I thought was incorrect, seems I was wrong.   What I would like to find out now is, was the engined swapped complete with its trans? or was it mated to the 41 hydramatic?   How would I distinguish the early box from a later one?

It has a strange reaction when reversing which I must cure. The engine starts to 'Pant' and wants to reverse in small bursts regardless of throttle position, almost as if your stabbing the pedal. I'm guessing its down to some sort of adjustment, possibly to do with the parking lock in reverse although how that can affect the carb is a mystery as theres no connection between to two.

I have ordered a manual for the early box but if it is a later one should I get a later manual? does the difference warrant that?

I have a '48 with hydro and it just has the pulley. I also remember changing a '48 hydro engine into a '41 with standard and noticing the '48 had only the pulley. We went ahead with the swap and it didn't seem to make a difference.    Harry

My 46 hydro also running only a pulley on the crank, no balancer.

When a Doctor "saves a Life" it does not necessarily mean that that life will ever be the same as it was, but he still saved it. My 46 may not be as it was but it is still alive.

So guys, I still need to know if theres any major differences between the early and late Hydro to warrant me getting a different manual.
