Mo,

I have commissioned a machinist to make me another 25 of these. I am hoping he might complete the task shortly.

I found my fix for this problem lying on a table in the basement. I'll post it this evening when I get back from our Region's hosting of our annual BPOCLC meet in Kokomo, IN.

Folks,

Did not mean to steal the post, sorry.

Got a new machinist working on the tools, the other one did not produce a single one after 16 months.

So am hopeful that will have a few shortly.

Steve and Mo will contact you via e-mail (I assume yours are listed in the directory) when I have some.

I really really want one and more than one if possible. I want to have a few for the future to share with those who encounter these 3 speeds in the future. I had no idea what I was getting myself into but it has evolved from helping myself to helping others. Pay it forward they say, I am.

Joe,

Will put you on the list, but the cost to make these has gone up dramatically since I last did this.

Will see what the new guys wants for making them.

I'm having some senior moments on how to get my picture scanned and getting it where I can post it so you guys can use a C-clamp to get this done. I haven't downloaded the full Office app, so I'll try e-mailing it to myself.

That's fantastically simple Barry. Does the special tool accomplish anything else? If not, Johnny, maybe you should cancel your order of tools? I'm going to do this on my car tonight.

Joe,

There are numerous ways to skin cats as there are to adjust this linkage. The shop manual offers a method to adjust if the J-1204 is not available.

As to Walt Brewer, he loaned me his j 1204 to make the new ones. He used that tool once he got it.

So will still continue on the path and if no one wants them then I guess I'll have a lot of spare ones.

Good point John. I will buy one for sure no matter the cost, maybe a few, depending. It's always depending, isn't it?

The Johnny,
I sent a PM, but put me down for one also.
The right tool for the job - can't go wrong.
Have fun,

Thank you Barry. Although I don't see the tool itself, I understand it's function. One question, The spring AL, I don't have that. Where does it go, and what gear does it assist?

Mo,

One end of the spring "AL" fastens over the groove on the end of the inner gear selector shaft and the other connects to the frame and is supposed to help prevent the gear shift lever from rattling.

Another of the many springs missing from my car. I wonder to myself if it was painted or not. I am assuming not.

I looked at my car today and can't really figure out where that spring should go. I really hate guessing.

Tom Beaver

Joe,

I don't think it matters much where you attach the spring as long as the rattle goes away.  I also don't think the cars, at least for 1938, came from the factory with the spring installed.  If you complained about a rattle the dealership would probably add it.  The spring number 147720 and attachment location is described in the shop manual for 38-50,60,60S and 65 cars and a different spring and attachment location for 38-75 and 90 cars.  The description in the manual didn't do much for me but I saw one on another 38 coupe so I pretty much duplicated that and I haven't noticed any rattles.  A picture is attached showing the lower end of the spring fastened to a grooved pin bolted to the frame rail.
