Hello to all of you. I need your help again. Have a problem with power brake booster. Just noticed it's leaking vacuum on pushing the brake and I don't have power brakes. I checked the booster and it's rusty inside. I will buy booster repair kit,but don't know how to clean walls of the booster? Can I do it my self by hands with sandpaper? It has some spots inside and they looks not so nice,it will not be easy to clean them. How can I solve this problem correct way?
Thank you

Marius,

You will need to inspect the complete booster wall once is disassembled to see what damage the rust made and if the booster can be salvage.

If the rust is just on the surface you can use a scuff pad to removed the rust, or if you have access to a blast cabinet use glass beads to do the job.

If the rust is deeper you could try a cylinder honing stone to go over the complete area and smooth as much as possible.  Just remember the booster thickness and do not go overboard.

If you plan on getting the repair kit just remember to read the fine print. There is a master cylinder kit only (gaskets, rubber seals, “O” rings) while others add the leather cup and call them master repair kit which is misleading.  ::)

Good luck..!

If the rust holes are too deep, using stones will be useless. I know I have a Delco-Moraine booster cylinder, but I don't know his condition. I'm home next week, I could check it.
As you know, there are two suppliers for 1956 brake system: Bendix and Delco-Moraine. The Bendix system has an aluminum master cylinder and the Delco-Moraine has a cast iron one, if I'm remembering well. I doubt that the booster cylinder is interchangeable between both makes.

Marius,

Is yours a Bendix or Moraine?

As Roger stated the two P/B units Moraine and Bendix are totally different from each other, the only part in the power piston that is interchangeable would be the leather cup, from what I recall.

I believe they also can be swap entirely as a bolt-on with same bracket and pedal rod, however I could be wrong.

I’ve worked/rebuild several Moraine units so I’m more familiar with the Moraine type than I am with the Bendix.

Good luck..!

Marius, according the parts book, the Bendix and Delco are different. Maybe you could get some luck on eBay.
