Has anyone else noticed how much hotter non-asbestos drum brakes run as compared to the old asbestos ones?  They may be better for our health, but . . .

Asbestos is an ideal material to dissipate heat, and that is the reason it was used for linings of Clutches and Brakes.

I still use Asbestos as a heat "stopper" when heating things that are close to combustible things.

Sorry Jon but Asbestos used to be used in the brake linings,l not the drums. The heat generated is a function of braking, not the materials used.  If brake drums are getting hotter it is because the brake systems are being used more harshley than they previously were.  People used to all discs in light cars try and transfer those braking patterns when they drive older all drum systems, and the brakes heat up.
