Phone charger blowing fuse?
« on: July 05, 2014, 02:10:26 PM »
Getting ready for drive in our 59 to the GN. I changed out one cigarette lighter socket to a new generic fits right in replacement. Plugged in my car phone charger into the new lighter with nothing attached and the 25amp body Feed blew after about 5 seconds. Any ideas?

Having the same problem as you with my fathers 59. Haven't looked into it yet though.

Check the polarity of the wires feeding the socket and make sure that the center pin on the charger is supposed to be hot.

Interesting. The original 59 factory lighter recepticle only has one connection point which takes the hot barrel end right onto the center. The new replacement has a center connection AND a spade connector on the body housing of the new recepticle. I only connected the factory harness wire to the center connection as was with the original.

Should the hot be going to the spade connector on the body of the new recepticle?  Or does that spade need to run to a ground?

I think the spade connector goes to ground and the center pin is the hot.

Nope. I ran a ground to the new spade connector on the body of the new recepticle and still blows fuse immediately. I cleaned up the other original ligjter socket by the pass side and plugged in the phone charger and it works fine.  This new socket keeps blowing fuses for some reason.

Put your DVM set on continuity and measure between the center connector and the side of the unit. If it conducts, the socket is no good.

Do you have any other devices you can try?   I'm wondering if maybe something in the design of that charger that is not compatible with that socket design.   I remember having a device that would do that in one car if I plugged it in 'right side up'.   If I plugged it in 'up side down' it was fine.   The plug looked symmetrical but there must have been something different.

Hahaha, yes, your car is telling you that it does not want this kind of modern stuff in it. Maybe a silly question, but why not just charge your phone on the pass. side, as you state that this works fine. I think the problem is in the new generic lighter socket.
