41 Series 63 Manual Transmission Oil Question

I recently purchased a '41 Series 63 and was reading about what transmission fluid should be used in the manual transmission.  I am new to this vintage so am looking for guidance from someone as to which fluid I should fill it with after performing a flush.

I read that there may be issues with using GL-5 type gear oil.  Is that true?  Should I be using GL-4 or even GL-3?

Use 80W-90W gear oil that you can buy in quart bottles at gas stations and auto parts stores.

Its been a while since I have had to know about the GL oils.   From what I remember it had to do with whether or not the transmission had synchros or not and what type they were.   Some of them required special properties to work properly.   In theory you could have an oil that is 'too slippery' and won't let the synchos work. 

GL-5 has the highest concentration of Extreme Pressure additives which can be corrosive to 'yellow metals' which is usually a brass copper zinc alloy.   GL-4 has a much lower amount of EP so its usually safe to use in machines that have some 'yellow' parts.   GL-1 was the original oil with no EP stuff but I don't think they make it anymore, its generally replaced with GL4.   If you can't have any additives you have to look into other classes of lubricants which can get confusing.

When I got my car it shifted very hard. Had to double clutch. Changed to Stalube Gl4(n*p*a) and made a big difference. From what I've read, gl5 is not backwards compatable as they say. Just my experience.
