I have 2 sets of wheel medallions as shown by the examples below.  The one example is more three dimensional than the other as shown by the  side view.  The face view shows a grainier or more pebbly background to the birds (swans or ducks) in the  example to the right. The tops of the crowns are white on the one (left)and ivory on the other. I realize that these are reproductions but which set would be more correct for 1949? Is one set more appropriate for another year or is this just a reproduction issue?

The one on the left is more correct, at least as to color of the "field" (ruby red, instead of bright red, as well as being more translucent and not as opaque).  Here are some original caps that I restored...

When you look at the profile of yours, which one of mine resembles the depth of yours because the crest is more significantly raised from the back portion  on one mine than on the other? It looks like the crest was pressed deeper on yours than my left one.

At least the ones I have seen are more deeply pressed.  So yes, the ones I have worked with are as deeply pressed as the right one in your pictures (the one with the incorrect bright red paint).

But I don't know if the factory always made them the same way.  I would not be surprised to learn that over the 6 years that these were made, there were variations like this...

Even though I like the deeper crest impression on the one set, I am going with the ruby red medallion.  I am just more impressed with it.

Can't go wrong with the ruby red, translucent set.  From any distance more than a few inches away, the ruby red set will look a lot more correct and prettier.  Good choice...
