Was AC standard equipment on all CDV's ?  I'm swapping emails with a seller who says the car does not have AC. its the difference between a car that never had it vs a car that someone might have taken a compressor out of.

I am pretty sure that AC was optional back then, as it was an extra-cost option.

Still optional in 1972. You could get a car new without it.

Did the climate control 'center' look any different?   Was it still automatic or if you didn't get the AC option did you get the manual slide levers like other GM cars?

Starting in 1964, all air conditioning on Cadillacs was Automatic Climate Control. It was optional until the mid or late 70s (standard equipment on Fleetwood series 75, and possibly mid 70 Eldoaros).

There was no "non-automatic AC" offered after 1964. Well, maybe in Cimmarons.

That said, by 1968 some 93-95% of all newly delivered Cadillacs had Climate Control, so finding one without it is unusual - and highly undesirable in my opinion.

I have seen a couple 72 Eldorados without A/C and they have the traditional slide controls.

So no ac meant you got the slide levers.     Would that also mean the 'heater box' on the firewall would be much smaller like other GM's?  Or was it such a rare option that maybe they still got the large box, it was just missing some internals?

With other cars when you didn't get AC pretty much all you saw on the firewall from under the hood was the blower motor and a couple of heater hoses.    The AC cars that box stuck well into the engine compartment and got quite close to the side of the engine which made it fun to change the #7 spark plug in the RWD cars.

A/C was an option at least thru the beginning of the 74 model year, although it became standard in the Series 75 cars much earlier. Perhaps Eric D can confirm the exact timing it became standard. I copied the following from the 71 Data book, sorry pdf  copied a bit weird but you can get the gist of it.

Ventilation And Heating Syatam
(NonA/CCare)
If air conditioning is not ordered, an upper
and lower level ventilation system provides
quiet draft-free air circulation with tha
windows closed. Air for tha system is taken
in at the base of tha windshield. This air is
discharged into the passenger compartment
through grilles located in tha center of the
instrument panel (upper level) and through
outlets in back of the instrument panel
(lower level). Control knobs for the dual
level ventilation system are located under
tha center of the instrument panel and on
the cowl trim panels. Tha instrument panel
knob controls the amount of air flow through
tha instrument panel grilles. The cowl trim
panel knobs control the amount of air flow
to tha lower level. The instrument panel
canter air outlets have adjustable louvers to
provide for directional air distribution. Tha
circulating air is routed under and behind tha
rear seat and is exhausted through the
ventilator louvers in the deck lid. The heating
system draws in air at the base of tha
windshield, circulates it through a heating
unit in tha engine compartment and
discharges it into the passenger compartmant
through a distributor unit below the
instrument panel at the center of the car.
Ventilation And Heating Controls
(Non A/C Cars)
Tha Cadillac ventilation and heating system
is operated by three horizontally movable
levers located on the instrument panel just
to the left of the steering column. The lower
lever turns the heater on and off and controls
tha temperature. The upper left lever controls
the fan speed, and the upper right lever
controls the heater and defroster. When
windshield de-frosting or de-fogging is
required in inclement weather, all three
levers must be placed in the extreme right
setting to clear the windshield.
