I'm considering replating my 49 trunk crest. The chrome isn't pitted, just wearing thin. The plating company tells me they cannot guarantee the enamel on the face won't get cracked or chipped in the process. I'm wondering if anybody has any experience here.... Is it worth the risk?

I say don't do it.  To do it properly, I think all the colored enamel would have to be chipped out first.  You could damage the crest in the process.  Then the plating then re enamel and fire in a kiln.

If I were you, I'd ask a jeweler.

I think you will find its the other way around Walter. I've recently had a badge done here in England for Brad Ipsom and the process involves the enameling first then plating as the chrome will not survive the time in the kiln.   I have sent many badges to them some with good enamel which they have only plated but they usually cover themselves in case the quality of that enamel is not as good as theirs .

I didn't think of that.  Any way you look at it, it won't be cheap.
