Automatic heater?? Never heard of that one, they are worked manually by a switch under the dash.

Steve, the "automatic heater" was the first attempt at "climate control". When I had one, you would find the temperature that you were comfortable with, and then left it there. The motor would speed up to increase the heat or slow it down to cool things off.

Parts book shows a 20 amp fuse to heater switch    Bill

I believe the automatic heater is what is called the deluxe heater in my 1942 and was an option.

There are 3 mechanical sections of the system plus the controls which modulate the Ranco valve

Under the dash is a heater-defroster and under the front seat are two under seat heaters.  The Ranco valve controls the water flow and the fan speeds and even the fan direction I think.

I read up on mine and restored the components and put them in a box a couple of years ago and now my restoration is almost complete I hope to be installing them soon.

1942 was the first year that fresh air was ducted into the cab also

Gary: You might already have seen the instructions below on the automatic heater and I am not sure if they also apply to a 42. I know they apply for the 46-47.    Bill

Not so Gary. I have a 41 sedan here with it fitted. From your description it also has everything you describe for the De luxe automatic heater. I have never had it working so I didn't click what it was.

In the 1942 models there are ducts built into the front fenders which bring fresh air from the Grille area. I think before 1942 they were cowl vents but am not sure?

I have the ducts running from the grill into the car with a cable that will close a flap in there when air is not required, the flap in in a metal section and the rest is convoluted cloth on wire tube now mostly rotted away and I still have the cowl vent.
