Lucky me, look what I found. :(

You don't need to remove valves to get the lifter body out unless theres damage there too?

The Tassie Devil(le)

What a lucky find.

Did it find its' way out the drain hole, or did you remove the sump?

The Tassie Devil(le)

Probably been broken for many years.

Has the cam lobe been damaged?

Hi. Did you get the block out yet? There's an easy way to do it, no special tools required……

No other damage. I just need to change the one body. How do I remove the body without releasing the valve spring?

The body is in a bank of 4 lifters in a lifter bracket. How do I get the pressure off of the bracket?

Number 7 exhaust valve lifter 1941 346.

Its not possible to get a spring compressor in there with the lifter block in place. You turn the engine over very slowly and watch for the cam lobes, at one point there will be at least 3 lobes not trying to lift the valves and one just starting and the lifter block will spring out once un-bolted.

Even with the lobes in the right positions the valve body will still sort of spring out a bit and that makes it a tricky job getting it back in. .  I have made these assembly tools before as I have never seen an original for sale, they are just a plate that covers the tops of the lifters allowing them to pass under the valve heads all together raising the valves just a little to allow the block in.
The lifter bodies must have no oil in them for reassemble as the resistance will not let them close,  lubricate them and then insert a thin wire into the hole at the bottom to release the ball off its seat,  push them home and give a slight turn clockwise to lock them
. Once the block is fitted you can fill the supply lines as best you can or turn the engine over with the coil disconnected to get some oil in there.

Both the follower and plunger assembly changed in 41 so they do not interchange with 40 and before.  The step in the ID of the follower is in a different spot along with the corresponding step in the plunger.  Why was this changed is a mystery to me.  The camshaft material was changed from steel to cast iron in 41 also so maybe there is also a change in the material of the follower and it was changed so these parts did not interchange back easily.  They will interchange in the cam follower guide if you change the complete assembly.
