Hello everyone. Ever since I got my 72 CDV the passanger side sun visor has not wanted to stay up. If you push it up and let go it falls back down about 3 inches. I have just tucked the visor in the seat belt holder for 2 years because we rarely use to drive the car. I have tightened the screw up some all the way in and it helped but still wont stay up. What is the fix for this?

Thanks and much appriciated

Looks like the screw needs to be really tight.

But, as you do it, don't slip, or you could be damaging yourself, or piercing the headliner.

Try removing the screw to see if the thread is stripped and not compressing the clamp.

My 72 CDV does the same thing. My solution so far has been the same as yours. I tried tightening the screws with no help. This is on my list of things to look at, but it is low priority, so I haven't gotten there yet. If you solve it, please share - I am sure there are more with the same problem.

I was having the same problem with the mirror and visor in my 63 SDV. My theory is that the screw head actually bottoms out before it starts tightening the clamp. I removed the screw and inserted a small  thin washer under the head of the screw. Your car might be different but worth a try. Worked for me.

Another generic trick not related to just this car but the clamps touch over the years preventing tightening on the shaft, sometimes its possible to run an hacksaw blade between the two haves of the clamp removing enough stock to allow it to tighten a bit further.  Remove the screw first of coarse ;D

Gavin,
Check to see that the inner shaft is not loose.  My little "trick" is to drill a very small hole through the collar and the shaft and hold the shaft in place with a very fine nail with both sides that extend through the hole clipped off.  It has worked for me for decades.

Alas, I have the same issues with my old gals... in a concentrated effort to fix this issue, I took one of my visors out of the car and to the work bench.  What I found is NOT encouraging.  The adjustment screw simply does not make up for the wear that occurs overtime by cycling the visor up and down... eventually, the plastic liner that wraps around the metal shaft simply loses enough of its grip to render the braking power insufficient for the job of holding up the damn thing.   I tried several options, e.g. Velcro, for one--- there seems to be no elegant fix.

Take the Pepsi challenge. A shim cut from an aluminum can fixed my droopy 57 visors.

Sounds like something has failed within the inner construction of the visor and the problem with that era is they were usually sealed plastic and you can't un-stitch it and get inside to fix it.

New plastic sleeves are being produced.  Check your fav parts book for some. Its a typical GM part.
