My 1958 is missing one of the inner cowl spacers that cushions the rear of the hood forever. I notice there are two types of spacers. One with 5 lines and one with 3 lines. I need a 3 line one (preferably used) to match the other seven.

Picture side has all four; driver's side only three.

Does anyone have one of these bumpers for sale?

I have no knowledge of the 1958cars but are you absolutely sure that what you have on the car is correct?  for one I cant imagine why they would have used two different types doing the same job in the same place and second 'Steele Rubbers' listing for the 58 is a different kind of bumper and only 4 of them?

They have been on the car since new - I only recently noticed there were only 7; I believe there should be 8.  This is an unrestored purchased new car.

It was just a thought. You know best.       Does that mean you bought the car in 58?

Jon,
Hopefully... this is a good time to ask. How old were you in 1958? If you don't mind telling.  I & I'm sure others are curious.
Thanks, Bob

This rubber strip and ribber bumpers were used on probably all 50s Cads. I think in one of my parts books I remember there being several sizes of bumper to help shim the hood to the cowl line. I'm not sure about the 3 or 5 rib originality. They often fell off. Possibly the rib count helped differentiate a height difference during install. Should be easy to locate a replacement. Ebay.

Steele Products has the 5 rib one, not the 3 rib one.  Anyone have a used 3 rib one?

Found it!  They are different heights. Would still prefer a used one if anyone has one to match the others.

Ok, now I'm wondering since the spacers are different heights by style if they were not strategically placed at the factory to keep the hood from vibrating/shaking and the fact there are 4 on the passenger side and only 3 on the driver's side, that was all they placed there?  It does not appear like one ever fell out. The hood does not vibrate at all.

Would other 1958 owners please check how many spacers they have under their cowls please and let me know. Thanks in advance.

Very astute of you Jon finding those. It threw me because 'Steele Rubber' shows them upside down in their catalog.  You may be on to something about your car not having any more on there originally because 'Steele' states "4 to 6 per car,  I reckon that 7 was all they needed to stop the hood shaking at the factory during final checks.  Getting the hood to sit right came before asymmetry.

Jon,
I have both styles you show in your original picture. Quentin is right about them being different heights. I've had another senior moment and misplaced your phone number AGAIN. Call me at 716 874 3223 and I can send you one of each or more. Thanx Frank
