1936 Cadillac series 60 transmission

On the front of the transmission is the sleeve the throw out bearing rides on, inside the sleeve is a groove for an o-ring or felt ? seal.  I tried an o-ring but can't get the sleeve in position because of the resistance of the o-ring.  Thinking maybe a felt seal, without something I think oil would migrate out of the transmission.  Has anyone had one of these apart?
