I'm replacing the rear shelf mat on my '60,and thinking about putting sound deadening mat on it to reduce extraneous sounds and rattles, as there is very little other than the seat back separating the interior of the car from the trunk on these cars.  In addition to the rear speaker opening in the sheet metal there are an assortment of other large holes and other openings in the rear shelf sheet metal.  Do these serve any purpose?  My inclination is to cover them over with sound mat. While I previously covered the area behind the seatback with sound deadening material, it still won't be anywhere near an airtight seal, so there won't be a pressure equalization problem; hopefully just increased quiet.
