Steering column removal?

How does the shift arm come off so the column can fit through the fire wall? There's a nut at the base of it but it only loosens a couple turns. Can't find anything in the service manual I have.

The shift arm itself is like a screw. The nut is there to lock the arm at the correct position. I'm not sure anymore, there must be a flat on that arm to insert an open wrench.

OK, Thanks! that makes sense. I was trying to hold the arm still and turn the nut.

Here is a pic which may help.
Note the threads behind the nut going to the end of the shaft which screws into the steering column.
