My '71 CDV has one taillight monitor out.  How does one troubleshoot these things?

Thanks

These are fiber optic cords--- they are mechanically held in the light pod, and when you take off the lens of the malfunctioning monitor, you'll see a small plastic button that is the terminal "pick-up" for the light tube monitor located near the light bulb... make sure that it's there... that the fiber optic "cable" hasn't dropped out of the tiny holder... if it has, there'll be a hole with a rubber gasket... and the missing cable will be dangling below.... maybe hanging off of the frame. fi If the monitor is not functioning on the front fender end, that might be the same issue-- the cable has come adrift, and needs to be replaced in position for you to see it.

On well used cars, I've had these cables dropped out of position or become so dirty on both ends that they hardly are visible.  Not sure how one should "clean" them without damaging the light sensitive strands that make up the light carrying properties of the cable.
